§ About

Founded in Tokyo in 2018 and relocated to Athens in 2024, MIRA新伝統 (pronounced MIRA SHINDENTO) is the art project of electronic musician Raphael Leray and performer Honami Higuchi, producing ritualized audiovisual performances.

Their work weaves theory-fiction, music and performance art into narratives that explore otherness and envision non-capitalist, post-anthropocentric future mythologies.

Released January 16th, 2026 on Infinite Machine (Mexico), Mythoplaxy is MIRA新伝統's debut album, a departure from both the tropes of dystopian club acceleration and the conventions of gallery-coded performance.

Across stage and studio, the duo have cultivated a performative language that fuses Shinto-derived ritual with the communal, itinerant traditions of popular theatre and mythic storytelling, echoing forms from ancient satyr plays to medieval cycles, set against the spectral terrains of post–techno-capital collapse.

The album comprises eleven sonic tales, ranging from electronic ballads to mythogenic fragments, conceived as the rudiments of a symbolic architecture. Each piece invites listeners to imagine the myths and ruins we might forge and choose to carry from this world into the next, echoing the propositions of Italian philosopher Federico Campagna.

Premiered with a music video on METAL Magazine.

In their work as MIRA新伝統, Honami Higuchi and Raphael Leray combine music with elements of theater and visual art for a final product that operates on multiple levels at once. It's heady stuff, so much so that I'd rather let the duo speak for themselves about the complex ideas behind their music rather than bungle it by attempting to summarize (which I almost certainly would).

The good news is that you can enjoy the music first without diving into the ideas behind it; Higuchi and Leray create a beautifully eerie sound world full of synths that slope and rattle and pop and ghostly vocals that drift forlornly across the top.

The drums, when they appear, stutter and trip forward rather than pulse in time, making songs like "Thesmophoria" feel as much like machine language as dismantled club tracks.

The vocals, when they appear, only add to the disorientation; in "Circus in Town," Leray speak-sings verses like "Watch out, here come the clowns" in a deep baritone, sounding like Ian Curtis in a duet with a Simon that's fritzing out.

If you'll forgive me a little floweriness: There's something almost bioluminescent about Mythoplaxy: weird glowing tendrils of pink and green waving against a dark skyline, gradually entangling you.

Inspired by empty Shibuya streets and post-industrial coastlines, Noumenal Eggs explores Otherness, dissonance and post-Capitalocene subjectivity. Drawing on Deleuze and Guattari's desiring machines and the theory-fiction of Reza Negarestani, the EP fractures time, body and sonic continuity.

Back in 2019, Japanese choreographer Honami teamed up with French expat producer Leray to assemble an hour-long performance that confronted Honami's personal story of sexual violence and her subsequent brush with the sex industry. […] "Noumenal Eggs" is the follow-up, this time exploring the idea of the body as a capitalist resource in the contemporary economy, drawing on work from Reza Negarestani and Mark Fisher. Sonically, the record is daring and positioned with both eyes facing starward; Leray's FM and wavetable expressionism is ideally matched by Honami's fragmented words and throaty shrieks, rubbing unsettlingly against robotic crunches and razor-sharp synths.

Mixed by Subtext boss and one half of Emptyset James Ginzburg, "Noumenal Eggs" sounds fully high-end, scraping thru its futuristic 4D world with ASMR-powered grace. On "Disembodiment", rapid-fire percussion sounds like ratcheting engines re-imagined using machine code, and Honami's manipulated groans fall into an android space […]. On the title track, Leray and Honami abstract their sound even more, losing all sense of structure in a hiccuping electrical storm of pinprick percussion and broken beatbox pulses; here Honami's vocals reach a psychosexual peak, flitting between pleasure-pain moans and alluring dream-pop coos. […]

Berlin's Ziúr finishes the EP in fine style with a typically unique redux of "Disembodiment" […]. The end result is a track that sounds like Coil being dragged through an empty factory after someone's accidentally summoned the Cenobites. Horrifying stuff, in the best possible way.

Live

MIRA新伝統's performance is a continuous work rather than a fixed piece, mutating from one edition to the next as its music, sculpture and staging evolve. What an audience encounters is always the current state of an ongoing metamorphosis.

It returns to ritual and myth-making as living practices: ways of composing meaning where the technical world denies existence to what escapes it. The dramaturgy moves in two parts, like an initiation passing from the profane to the sacred: a descent through the socio-technical strata of contemporary identity until the pressure cracks it open, then an opening outward, where two figures face the task of worlding within the rubble.
